An analysis of the frequency of the letters occurring in the main entries in the “Concise Oxford Dictionary” found that the letter E occurred in 11.2 percent of the words, making it the most commonly used letter. The letter A came in second by appearing in 8.5 percent of the words. The least occurring letters were X (0.29 percent), Z (0.27 percent) and J (0.2 percent), with Q coming in last with 0.19 percent.
