Astor made his fortune in real estate, building the Astoria hotel in 1897 – which was regarded at the time as the world’s most luxurious hotel. The hotel was adjoined to the Waldorf Hotel, which was owned by his cousin. The building complex eventually became known as the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. He also built many more luxurious hotels, including the St. Regis. Astor was the richest man aboard the ship, when his body was recovered he had $2440 on him.
